What
codes and conventions are your conforming or subverting?
As you should
know, the production that we are creating consist the genre, Thriller/Drama.
Firstly, How does the production conform to the conventions of thriller? Well
lets start with the sounds and the music that will be used. In most thriller
movies, the music played in the background creates suspense in which our
product will also do. The reason for
this is that the audience will be aware the product is a thriller offering them
safety as they will know what content will be included as well as fulfilling
their needs of a thriller genre movie. Therefore, our product will be
conforming to thriller in terms of the music. In terms of sounds, our product
will consist sounds of a footsteps (digetic) as well heavy breathing to also
build up suspense. The sounds of footsteps coming from an unknown location is
seen in many thriller movies or TV shows such as Stranger Things, conforming to
the conventions of a thriller text.
A
variety technical codes will be used for
our production such as camera angles, lighting, voice-overs etc. In terms of lighting, low –key lighting
will be used in some scenes to make it
more dramatic as the product is meant to
be drama and thriller. Low-key lighting is seen in many dramas and thrillers
which therefore means we will be conforming to their codes as well as shadows
being used to create a dark, suspense atmosphere. However, our product will not
be using black and white shots which can be seen in many classic thriller
movies, therefore challenging the conventions of thriller. This is good as
gives the audience more excitement as they would not expect that, engaging them
even more as they would want to see what other new things would be included
that they wouldn't know about.
Moving on to visual codes, our product will
consist a variety of codes helping the audience to understand the product for
instance, the location. In most scenes the location will be in a dull , small
room to create an isolated atmosphere. During this scene one of the characters
with be in there playing as a psychotic man. The use of the camera angles used
during this scene will engage the audience with camera angles such as over the
shoulder, where they will get the perspective of the character. The use of the
props being used will challenge the conventions of thriller for example, knifes
are stereo typically seen in thrillers as well as other weapons however, our
product will not consist any weapons challenging the conventions. For some
viewers this may be shocking however, for others this will make them curious on
how the product will be made to reach the requirements of a thriller genre. The
use of acting will be dark as in mist thrillers/drama movies, the acting are
rather dark to build suspense where as if the acting was more positive (happy) a different
atmosphere would be created such as a happy atmosphere, which doesn't conform
to thrillers/dramas. Overall, the product will conform most of time to the
conventions of thrillers in order to reach the needs and requirements of the
audience however, the product will aim to challenge some of the conventions in
order to give a little bit of excitement to the audience.
