The text below is a deconstruction of my induction test in which I was to do. Multiple of improvements hae been made inorder to reach the requirements of the induction criteria.

Media – Induction test (Deconstruction)

During the chase of the chicken, Lil Zee, the leader of the gang seen through the dominance he has over the crew with low shot angles used to emphasise this, rather than the other members, seems very powerful and fearful. For instance, a low angle shot has been used to emphasise the power of Lil Zee, when he had pushed the man with pots with a gun pointed at him. This conforms to stereotypes of criminals with weapons (Iconography- gun are known to be very dangerous) having more power than innocent victims such as the man with the pots with facial expressions of hopelessness. From this the audience are offered safety, as they are able to identify what the moving images are about and can predict what will happen next as it conforms with the stereotypes. After the man has been pushed, a close up shot of lil Zee had been used, highlighting the enjoyment of his violent actions making the audience intimidated by the cold-hearted boy’s action. The use of editing had juxtaposed this scene (montage) giving it a fast pace, which fulfils the needs of the audience as it gives a thrill of excitement to them, with multiple of actions happening at once.

Although the chicken was not the main focus on which the audience should take to considerations however, the parallel sound of the music played in the background corresponds with the chicken running away as the pace of the music matches the speed of the chicken, whom seems very scared of the group as he is practically running for his life. This also suggests the danger of the gang on living things as they are willing to kill someone in order to fulfil the needs. The audience would be aware of this due to the joy of their actions seen through their facial expressions, making the audience have a sense of fear (typically known people fear ruthless people). The camera movement also follows with the chicken (tracking Shot) to engage the audience with the moving images. The audience will be thrilled and excited in hoping the chicken escapes from the ruthless characters, which the fear the chicken feels is what the audience would also feel, assuming the tracking shot had made them part of the action.

A pan shot had been used (From the perspective of the two boys) during the scenes of which the gang entering the streets where two young boys were walking through. The two young boys seems to represent innocent people caught up in the wrong moment, whose lives are at danger, with one side of the road with a gang to signify they are a threat to their lives (Weapons etc are held), where as the other side are police officers with guns also. The close up shot of the boy (With the camera) during this situation seems to be scared and feared for themselves due to their facial expressions. The pan shot gives the audience gives a sense of their situation enabling the audience to have an intense feeling as they wouldn’t want two young victims to get hurt.  Binary opposites can be seen during this scene with the good on one side (Police) who try to prevent danger from happening to your life, where as the other side consist of the bad (gang) who could possibly do the complete opposite. However, the two boys stand in between suggesting that both the good and bad can mainly focus on each other in situations rather than their surroundings challenging the stereotypes of the good e.g. a hero saving innocent people instead. This is seen with the police focusing their guns at the gang rather than trying to help the two boys out to safety, the audience could feel shocked as some societies couldn’t care about victim’s lives in situations that doesn’t include in their main objectives.

Going back to editing technique of time comparison used to capture the moment of the whole gang entering the road (With the two boys), had been used to create an intense feeling to the audience as the time comparison used empathise their power and danger. In particular Lil Zee, who seems to be the leader of the gang as we can tell also from the full-shot of him being in the centre of the whole gang (Still part of the time comparison scene), highlighting the authority and danger of him, as he has the man power (Guns etc) to do vital actions. The audience could feels intimidated of his power.

The first scenes after the chicken had escaped; consist of an Arial shot to show the group of boys chasing the chicken as well as the area they are running in. The Arial shot had been used to highlight the poverty that countries face, as a number of children are running as fast as they can to catch the chicken (to get food – hunger/starvation), as well as joining gangs , forced into a lifestyle they shouldn’t be in. In other words they are desperate to eat the chicken etc in order to survive as well as forced to joining gangs in which they are offered protection and respect at the same time, influencing them to join. The audience would feel sympathy towards the children as children, should not be brought up in a world of violence, and also to catch and hunt for food. In some cases the sense of the gang community is a sad one, as kids are forced to join gangs and do actions they don’t want to do. However, this gang community does not seem a sad one as their faces throughout the scenes seem delighted of their immature, dangerous actions.

The use of non-digetic sounds such as gun shots used when they were shooting the gun, had been used to give a mix of emotions of fear and excitement to the audience. The non-digetic sound of the gun signifies danger and death possibly on what will be shown later. The audience are aware of this as in today’s society weapons such as guns are used to take people’s lives away. The audience would therefore expect a death to occur later on, making them feel fear and feel anxious, as they would not want the two boys who have a close relationship seen through the mid shot, to get killed as they could represent teenage victims.
