Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for the opening sequence is aimed at people aged 15-21, in other words the younger audience. The characters that are played in the opening sequence gives evidence to this point due to the actors / characters being young. This enables the audience to be engaged to the extract considering they can relate and understand the characters as they are around the same age and part of the younger generation, for which their expectations and needs will be achieved seeing the characters will perform those roles. We have chosen this audience as we want to go against the stereotypes of drama/thriller (A form of diversion) which consist older adults who don’t necessarily relate or engage the younger audience. Also, knowing we ourselves are young, we were able to construct an extract that will best suit the younger audience, knowing ourselves have had many experiences for which other young audiences can relate to, can construct an opening sequence that will appeal to them.

Looking at the hyperdermic needle, the media have 'injected' large masses of dominant media ideology in to the minds of consumers who consume these media products. The hyperdermic needle have formed 'survivors' who are those who want security and like routine hence, the majority of our audience would be those who are aware of the conventions/stereotypes of a thriller/drama as the young audience in our society, are easily manipulated by these media ideology. We therefore  follow some of the stereotypes that have been injected into their minds, in order for our product to appeal to them.

  • The research tasks have been updated especially, and organised separately with a variety of different media tools / software used to produce it.

  • Main and Finished Product will be published soon (Unable to use the system that consist our extract to publish it at the moment).

Audience Feedback - Extract / Opening sequence

Feedback from Audience of our Extract (Draft and Finished)

 Main advantages given by peers:
  • CCTV theme placed in couple of the scenes was suggested to be "Unique" and "Well thought" to place it in the extract.
  • Good use of score placed in the extract, "not to loud but just enough to hear the dialogue clearly"
  • The score/music wasn't played too much
  • Good use of digetic sound from the Psychotic character when isolated in the room. Builds a "Tensed" atmosphere.
  •  Good use of editing overall, no to many cuts placed in but a consistent flow of the scenes.
  • Camera angles were used appropriately and effectively, engaging the audience to the extract.

Main Disadvantages:
  • The main doctor could've been older to make him a more "realistic" character.
  • Typography used in the extract looks a bit "Tacky."
  • Some of the cuts to different scenes could be edited smoother.
  • More camera angles could have been used.
  • Extract is too long, need to be cut down lower in order for it to be classified as an opening sequence (Exam Board).
What improvements have we done from our feedback?

Unfortunately, due to the time we have been given, we was un-able to find an adult to play as the doctor therefore, we have used a 17 year old to play as the doctor. As some may see this in a negative way, we see this as a way of challenging the stereotypes of a doctor which is known to be an old man. Having a 17 year old as the doctor will also engage our audience who are between 15-19 years old, as they can relate to the character (Similar age) familiarizing themselves to the extract.
The typography have been improved dramatically for which our teacher agrees as well of it looking considerably better. The text font has been changed and positioned differently compared to our draft (Updated Opening sequence / extract will be posted soon). The cuts of the scenes has also been improved as well, giving a more 'smoother' flow to our extract enabling our audience to consume the opening sequence comfortably.

However, we was unable to film again due to the deadline of the production as well as getting permission to film in the building which would have taken a long time for it to process therefore, we was unable to film more shots but, Joseph (editor), was able to use his skills efficiently and cut different scenes and placed them together, solving the problem and producing a better quality extract. The extract was shortened to 2:17 minuted however, it was around 10 seconds above the maximum limit in which we could not possibly shorten it more.

Research - Target Audience for Our Production

Research - Convention

What codes and conventions are your conforming or subverting?

As you should know, the production that we are creating consist the genre, Thriller/Drama. Firstly, How does the production conform to the conventions of thriller? Well lets start with the sounds and the music that will be used. In most thriller movies, the music played in the background creates suspense in which our product will also  do. The reason for this is that the audience will be aware the product is a thriller offering them safety as they will know what content will be included as well as fulfilling their needs of a thriller genre movie. Therefore, our product will be conforming to thriller in terms of the music. In terms of sounds, our product will consist sounds of a footsteps (digetic) as well heavy breathing to also build up suspense. The sounds of footsteps coming from an unknown location is seen in many thriller movies or TV shows such as Stranger Things, conforming to the conventions of  a thriller text.

A variety technical codes  will be used for our production such as camera angles, lighting, voice-overs  etc. In terms of lighting, low –key lighting will be used in some scenes  to make it more dramatic  as the product is meant to be drama and thriller. Low-key lighting is seen in many dramas and thrillers which therefore means we will be conforming to their codes as well as shadows being used to create a dark, suspense atmosphere. However, our product will not be using black and white shots which can be seen in many classic thriller movies, therefore challenging the conventions of thriller. This is good as gives the audience more excitement as they would not expect that, engaging them even more as they would want to see what other new things would be included that they wouldn't know about.
Moving on to visual codes, our product will consist a variety of codes helping the audience to understand the product for instance, the location. In most scenes the location will be in a dull , small room to create an isolated atmosphere. During this scene one of the characters with be in there playing as a psychotic man. The use of the camera angles used during this scene will engage the audience with camera angles such as over the shoulder, where they will get the perspective of the character. The use of the props being used will challenge the conventions of thriller for example, knifes are stereo typically seen in thrillers as well as other weapons however, our product will not consist any weapons challenging the conventions. For some viewers this may be shocking however, for others this will make them curious on how the product will be made to reach the requirements of a thriller genre. The use of acting will be dark as in mist thrillers/drama movies, the acting are rather dark to build suspense where as if the acting  was more positive (happy) a different atmosphere would be created such as a happy atmosphere, which doesn't conform to thrillers/dramas. Overall, the product will conform most of time to the conventions of thrillers in order to reach the needs and requirements of the audience however, the product will aim to challenge some of the conventions in order to give a little bit of excitement to the audience.
